From Dyer's Compendium

6th Independent Company Cavalry. Organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, August and September, 1861. Moved to Washington, D.C., September 23, 1861. Duty at Park House and near Old Soldiers' Home till December. Assigned to 3rd New York Cavalry as Company "L" and Joined Regiment at Poolesville, Md., December 9, 1861. (See 3rd New York Cavalry.)
